You bounce right on down the road until the ball joints or strut mounts break. Mavbe the wheels fall off, maybe they don't. Along with the suspension, everything else on the car suffers from the force of being bounced around that hard. How long til the air conditioner breaks a line? How long til the wheel bearings sieze up? Shock absorbers absorb shock. How much shock do you want to inflict on the car? Something terrible will eventually happen.

When you drive the car, it will continually bounce. When you go over a bump, it won't stabilize or level. You have to have good shocks to keep the car running smoothly and in control.

most of the previous answerer's are correct but it will also shake badly during braking it also tears the road up but no one really cares about that. The long term effect of not changing your shocks will be that you beat your car/truck up from the bumps in the road wearing everything out right down to the wiring.

Very uncomfortable ride, they start to leak, messes up your alignment and wears your tired faster, lessens the stiffness on your suspension, therefore causing more body roll, less handling, slower braking reactions. The whole nine.
