Because the concept of Unknowns in the equations may be a New concept to you.

Suggestion: Review the previous answers to Pre-Algebra equations and try to see the Logic in the solution. Also, seek Tutoring from a class mate that has little difficulty with the Pre-Algebra Class.

Good luck, One day the complete concept will come to you...as it did for me.

It's not very hard at all. Study more. Once learned, you will see how simple and common sense pre-algebra is. Either you need to get more practice and do more homework problems or maybe your teacher isn't explaining the subject in a way you can understand. Visit you teacher and ask for help with things you don't understand. I am sure your teacher will be glad to help you.

One reason is that, until now, equals has meant "the answer" -- which isn't correct, and is confusing when you get to pre-algebra.

The equals sign means "everything on one side of me is the same amount as the other side of me"

so 6 = 6

That also means that, if you change one side, say, by adding 2, you have to do that to the other side, to keep it true.

6+2 = 6+2
8=8

See? You still have a true statment, even though you changed things.

Works for anything you need to do:

6/2 =6/2

3=3

So, you always want to keep the thing true. To do that, if you need to do something to one side of the equation, you also need to do it to the other side.

Since the way arithmatic is taught hides this fact, you get confused when you get to pre-algebra.

Just keep going over the simplest things untill you really geet them.

If you understand it, then later stuff will make more sense.

It can be challenging, but don't shy away! This is unfortunately how life will be: full of challenges. You can back down, and live a stagnate, non-challenging life or you can GET ON!

Good luck and don't step down - rise to the challenge:-)
