The first thing you want to look at is the mileage on the engine. If it has over 125,000 on it, you would be better off rebuilding the motor than just replacing the head gasket. When you replace the head gasket, and have the head checked and trued if needed, you cause the compression in the motor to increase, which will put extra strain on the pistons, rings, rods, and bearings. On an older motor you should at the very least replace the rings and bearings.
That being the case, it should cost about $50 for a head gasket set, and the labor should be somewhere in the neighborhood of $400.
Put a new timing belt and water pump on at the same time, and have the radiator and fans checked! That motor blows a head gasket when the coolant gets low or the motor overheats. You also want to have the fan relay checked, as that has a history of causing problems!

A 2.0 Liter SOHC (Single Over Head Cam) head gasket labor is 8.2 hours at say, $65 per hour equals $533 plus parts (about $100). Add any extras like valve work, timing belt and fix whatever caused the head gasket to fail in the first place. If the engine is the DOHC (Double Over Head Cam) design labor is about $30. less.

The head gasket kit from Chrysler, which includes the head gasket itself, plus ALL other gaskets, should cost about $120.00. Add coolant and about 6 and half, to 7 hours labour to that, whatever the hourly labour rate is for the shop in your area, and that should break it down pretty closely.

I had one, well a 99 neon, but same car. I remember that on those 2 lite sohc engines it is pretty easy to get at this thing. The intake comes off easy and there you go. I would say you could do it yourself if you are pretty handy. If not might be about an hour or two of labor and the parts are pretty cheap, might be like 50 bucks.

more than you want to spend on a piece of crap like that. Parts cheap, labor 6 or 7 hundred.
