No height has been lost from the monument, which would be 570 feet above the ground beneath it whether it was on a hill or in a hollow. But, the ground beneath and all around has indeed sunk -maybe as much as 9 feet, ..somewhat stabilized now that groundwater pumping has been slowed in the area. So, area that used to be marsh is now covered with water, as you said.

From USGS fact sheet on subsidence in Houston area:
"Land subsidence in the Houston-Galveston Bay area has increased the frequency and severity of flooding (fig. 4). In this low-lying coastal environment, more than 10 ft of subsidence (fig. 2) has shifted the position of the coastline and changed the distribution of wetlands and aquatic vegetation. In fact, the San Jacinto Battleground State Historical Park, site of the battle that won Texas independence and commemorated with the San Jacinto Monument (fig. 2), is now partly submerged. "

RE:
Is the San Jacinto monument still sinking; if so, how much height has it lost from the 570 feet?

My mother was 5' 5 when she was younger. She was about 5'1" when she passed away. So far I've lost maybe 1/2 an inch. Was 5'5 1/2", now I'm 5'5". Hopefully I won't loose as much a my mother. I read an article that said that our feet are one things that does not stop growing. I have to believe that because my feet were size 7 1/2 when I was younger. They're now size 9 and that is the bone. I hope they don't continue to grow, don't want to be size 11 when I die. The article also said that the pelvic area also grows outward. Hopefully that's not as drastic as the feet.
