Me and my mom are arguing over what makes a chopper a chopper and what makes a crotch-rocket a crotch-rocket. By crotch-rocket I mean like a Suzuki Hayabusa or a Ninja. I say a chopper is defined by the sound it makes but yeah whatever. Please answer so that we can settle this. Thanks.

Sound has nothing to do with it. A crotch rocket is a high-performance sportbike motorcycle. If you are living with your mom, you don't have the experience to ride one safely. It is fast, touchy, and doesn't have much margin for error. It also costs a lot to repair when you tip it over while you're learning to ride. An example is a Kawasaki Ninja® 250R.
A chopper is a cruiser style bike that has a lot of the pieces of the bike "chopped off." The intent is to make them go faster. Again, if you are young and inexperienced, these are not for you. Here is a page with pictures you can check out.

Chopper - Bike with as much removed as can be to make it lighter and faster. Short or no fenders, no passenger seat, side plastics removed, mufflers removed, etc.

Bobber - Bike with extended forks, generally a springer type of fork but others are available. Like you see in the Easy Riders movie

Custom - A non-production one of a kind bike you typically see from the bike builders. They make them for specific purposes.

Sportbike - Bike made with speed and racing in mind. Aerodynamic. The rider is supposed to tuck in behind the small screen and get under the wind. Usually made for a small, light rider. GSXR, R6, Ninja.

Street Fighter - This is the chopper of the sportbike world. All unnecessary stuff is removed so the bike can go faster. Usually the plastic has been removed because it's been dropped a few times and the plastic is broken or rashed up. The muffler might also be exchanged or removed.

Touring Bike - Sitting upright. Full sized windshield. Might have a radio or other entertainment system. Harley Ultra Glide, Honda Gold wing.

Sport Tourer - Bike where you sit somewhat upright but the bike's sportier. Has a trunk and saddlebags that are available from the manufacturer. FJR, or Honda ST1300.

Dual Sport - Bikes created for some off roading. Bigger nobby tires. Higher bike so it can get over dirt, rocks, and whatnot. BMW Dakar, Suzuki V-Strom, Honda Transalps.

For your argument, the Hayabusa and new Ninja ZX14's wouldn't really be classified as crotch rockets. They're very large and crotch rockets are typically thought of as the smaller 600 and 1000cc bikes. The 'busa and Ninja's are either drag bikes or can have bags added so they can be super sport tourers. Much more agressive than a regular sport tourer.

The Hayabusa and Ninja could be "choppers" or street fighters by just removing a bunch of the plastic and other unnecessary bits.

Really a "chopper" describes what you do to a bike to achieve a goal. A crotch rocket is generally thought of as the 600 or 1000cc race type bikes.

Silly non biker. A chopper has extended forks and your sitting position is like sitting on a recliner with your legs and arms reaching foward for the shifter and throttle. A crotch rocket your whole upper body is lying across your gas tank and you leg are under your hips. A chopper is not designed for high speed traver but is more of a piece of art. The crotch rocket is more aerodynamic and more stable at higher speed.

Choppers have very long-extended forks...think Harleys with forks waaaaay out there, like in the movie "Easy Rider". A chopper is defined by appearance. A crotch-rocket is also defined by appearance and its makers' intentions--for example, a GSXR or CBR is a crotch-rocket, but a sporty bike with plastic, like a VFR or Katana, is NOT a crotchrocket.

The racing style bike(I don't like the term crotch rocket) looks more like a motorcycle, God knows what a chopper is supposed to look like. As regards to people that remove parts to make it go faster you would have to remove a heck of a lot of cast iron on a Hardly Abelson.

Easily settled...sound is not part of the equation. A chopper is a bike that has been customised - extended forks, handle bars like ape hangers, maybe a sissy bar and saddlebags. You sit leaning back in a relaxed postion. A crouch rocket is a cafe racer wear you lean forward...like a Ninja...uncomfortable unnatural head postion.

Choppers are Harley's or there clones S&S etc, @ one time Triumphs & Nortons could be choppers, but those days are gone.
