Sorry but I'd say that you may have picked up some bad habits over the last twenty years and that is why you are failing.
A new learner uses mirrors more, hold the steering wheel correctly and probably takes more time at junctions and roundabouts.
I dont believe the test is any harder now.
I passed mine because I was totally relaxed and treated it as a lesson or practise test. I stalled my car twice in the first two minutes and was convinced it meant failure. If I had reacted badly I would have failed!
I dont think luck plays any part either. I was told it was a bad day to take my test and that they would already have filled the 'quota' for the week!
My brother has been driving on a Provisional License too and next month takes test number 5. He keeps failing because the examiners mark him down for not being cautious enough!
Hope this helps.
Try an relax, think of it as a trial and remember you are supposed to BE a learner.
Good Luck. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Yep, I passed on my third test ...
First test i had an awful examiner who deliberately rushed me, totally threw my concentration and then was really unpleasant at the end of the test. I'd also met an uncanny amount of freak traffic conditions which was very off putting with such an unfriendly examiner in the passenger seat.
Second test i had a great examiner but it was a supervised test and guess what .. the supervisor was the nasty examiner from my first test. We both recognised each other and I never had a chance even though my instructor says I should have been passed on that test. I was actually failed for following road markings - apparently didn't conform to the DSAs ideas.
Then I had an early morning test, it was a bit frosty (nothing serious, I had been driving 1 hour already and it was nothing to worry about at all) however there was only myself and one other lady at the test centre for that test time and so the examiners went out on the roads to "check them out" and came back and said that it wasn't safe for the tests to proceed. (They still get paid, even though the tests didn't take place, and they didnt have to go out on a cold saturday morning). I am reliably informed that the following week in worse conditions they allowed driving tests to go ahead.
So my third test was re-booked! I arrived on the day just hoping for a good examiner ... got one who was new to my local test centre and passed with one minor fault.
The standard of driving that is expected is much, much higher. However, no doubt over the last 20 years you have had much quality tution and practice and will have built up valuable experience on the roads.
On the day of your test it all seems to be down to your examiner ... even if you do something you could be failed for, they have to use their descretion and they may pass you because you are on the whole a very good, consistant safe driver.
I'd just say don't worry. I've known a lot of people pass that should no way have been allowed on the roads, and I know people who have failed several tests who are great drivers.
Just do your best on the day with whatever weather and traffic conditions you face, whether your examiner is sour faced or smiley, don't worry just drive your best in the circumstances - it's all anyone can ask of you.
Best of British for tomorrow :)

Are you in the UK? If so it is completely rediculous to be a provisional driver for twenty years as a provisional licence is only valid for a maximum of 2 years.
If not, good because after twenty years of learning, if you still can't pass the test you are probably a danger to others and I don't want you driving on roads near me.

Tests were made harder to improve the standard of the novice driver and to improve road safety. I passed my driving test on Thursday, 11th March, 2003 at about 14:20. It was a good feeling to have. The driving test is a way of making sure that we all reach a set standard before letting us drive solo.
Good luck for tomorrow.

Yes they are harder, it took me 4 attempts. I find it ridiculous that your whole driving career is based on 30 odd minutes when you are so nervous you can't think straight, when would you ever be like that again. My friend just failed her test because of only nerves, she's been taking driving lessons for years as her dad is an instructor! I think your licence should be awarded by the instructor based on your skill over time. Not on those 30 odd minutes of a test!
Good Luck and don't worry you'll do it

I passed on my third test. I thought I was OK too but on each of my previous tests nerves overcame me!
I dont think tests are harder, I think it just comes down to your frame of mind. Try not to think of it as a test more like a lesson, concentrate on what you are doing and try not to think of anything else, and I wouldnt tell anyone you know you are going for it - theres no pressure then, if you fail, put in for it again, if you pass, then you've got a great surprise to tell people about.
I really hope it all goes well for you.
Good luck

I always find such technical tests are pieces of cakes! I passed my driving and motorcycle riding tests with A+. I think just depends how nervous and coordinate you are. Some people are just not meant to be behind the wheels.
Roads have always been the same, but traffic gets heavier. But that shouldn't make it more difficult. That's why cars are equipped with brakes and brake lights. Be warned!

They seem to be getting longer as well.. I passed my test 4 years ago on my 3rd go. The first attempts i was really nervous and nerves got the better of me as i wanted to pass so much.
On my 3 rd go i just thought well if i don't pass i can just go for it again it's not the end of the world, and that seemed to do the trick for me. Oh and lots of rescue remedy.
Good luck tomorrow just keep your nerve and you'll be fine

Couldnt agree with you more ive failed 3 times, and i honestly thought that on my last test i had passed. I think there is a quota on how many they can pass a day and i also think that if the test instuctor is in a bad mood on the day of your test he will fail you anyway. Im peed of with the whole thing, ive spent thousands on it, and to top it off my theory has now expired and ive got to start from scratch.
