In america we spell night( like when the sun goes down) the same way as the British. And we probably chsnged color because we wanted to be different. Right after the war of independance an old man named Webster created the first American -english dictionary aND THE SPELLINGS NEARLY ALL stayed the same since. I am not sure if it was purposeful to change the spelling or if it was natural adaption( like the way our accents change, over time).

We still spell night, like 'night'. Nite is not a word, but we spell color without a 'u'. We just have our own way of learning English.

In usual, we spell "night" just like that. "Nite" is usually used in advertising. The use of the "u" in color, comes from the English way of spelling. Not using the "u" is more of an Americanization way of spelling it.

An American named Noah Webster set out around the time of the American Revolution to document and publish a definitive representation of the "American language." This involved certain simplifications (i.e. "colour" to "color", and "favourite" to "favorite"), and changes in letter usage (i.e. "practise" to "practice", "analyse" to "analyze" etc.). The bulk of these changes were simply the result of living far away from England and in a different society, possibly a subconscious way of establishing a cultural uniqueness. However, some differences were deliberate, and there was a movement headed by Benjamin Franklin to eradicate all "silent letters" from American English (i.e. "knife" to "nif"). This was mostly a semi-absurd continuance of the hatred of All Things English. However, it ended up being somewhere in between, and you have the relatively subtle differences we have today.
P.S. We say "night", not "nite".

Simplification of the spelling of words. Good in some ways, bad in others. Its happening this side of the pond to some extent with the abreviations that people use when texting.

Because all Americans are not English....we have a different form of English....don't they have the same sort of thing in Australia? How about Canada...it's called an elevator there not a lift.

Well, when I went to America the other year, most Americans like to prounce the vowels in words. Probably my take on it though.
For example,in Britain we say Tomato as To-ma-to but in the states they say To-may-to.
