From your question I get the impression that you're not 100% savvy with the workings of your PC.
The first thing to do is download the drivers for your sound card, and install them, which is 99% certain to fix the problem.
To do this find out what card is in your PC (if you don't know it you can find out in device manager - found via control panel and system) and just go to the website for the manufacturer and search for the downloads section for your product.
If its an onboard soundcard (built into the mother board) you should just get the latest driver pack for your mother board.

Before you go to all that bother, try the simple things, like making sure you havnt turned your volume all the way down in another application. To check this, check out your system tray (where you can see the time on your screen), there should be a little dark grey speaker image there if your sound is working, double click it, and make sure all your "audio out" channels that come up in the next window, are turned up, make sure your speakers are powered up, and plugged into the hole on the back of your pc (the green one if they are colour coded) - Hopefully some of this sorts you out ! :)

is this a new computer or used? When I first got my computer is was shipped from back east. I called the store and a tech came out and he said that the sound card got damaged in the shipping. He order a new one, and he came back in a week to install it.
You should check with the store where you bought it from. The warranty will cover a sound card, otherwise you might have to pay for a new one.
