It was much harder than it is now, as very few people had cars. Families were a lot bigger, and priests had much more power - nowadays most families have less than 4 children and very few people go to Mass, even in the country. Food was a lot more basic, most people in that era had never even heard of pasta, never mind eaten it. And a lot of people left for America, England, Australia, Canada simply because there were very few opportunities in rural Ireland, unless you were a landowner or extremely astute and slightly unscrupulous.
