Ok, so Maggie's sells 5 lbs for $5.95, while Coffee Carrol sells 5 lbs for $5.75 (5 x 1.15). So Carrol has the better deal.

5 pound bag @ $ 5.95 means 1 pound is $ 1.19 (5.95 divided by 5). Carroll sells @ $1.15 so Carroll has the better buy. So you need to divide. In case you need to know how much the 5 pound in Carrolls you multiply: 1.15 x 5 = $ 5.75.

Take $5.95 and divide it by 5:
5.95/5=$1.19

According to the math, Coffee Carrol has the better deal because she sells her coffee per pound 4 cents cheaper than Maggie's market.

find the unit price, or the price of one pound) of coffee for each store and compare which one is cheaper.

To find the unit price of coffee at Maggie's market, you divide $5.95 by 5, which turns out to be $1.19. The problem already gives you the price for one pound of coffee at Coffee Carrol--$1.15. It turns out that Coffee Carrol has the better buy at $1.15/lb compared to $1.19/lb at Maggie's Market.

Divide 5.95 by 5 = 1.19 per pound, so Coffee Carrol has the better deal.

To compare both, you need the price per lb.

1.15 per lb is one price.
The other is 5.95 per (or divided by) 5 lbs.
This is the same as 5.95/5 = 1.19 per lb.

Since 1.15 is less than 1.19 per lb.
1.15 is the "better buy."

Note on coffee: When comparing different brands, there are other important factors that affect which coffee is "better" to buy.

Products that protect "fair trade" carry a special label monitored on http://www.transfair.org Without this "fair trade" label, you could be giving your money to corporations that exploit poor workers in foreign countries by paying slave wages. A graduate student at University of Houston just published an article about this, and led a campaign on campus to lobby the school administration to review vendor contracts for ethics violations.

So if this matters to you, if you would rather buy coffee from companies with humane business ethics, look up the companies on transfair.org.

Ethical companies that respect local farmers and workers need greater consumer support to compete with larger corporations that don't care how they make their profits. We need to vote with our dollars as well as with our ballots. As demonstrated by students nationwide, this is one lesson you may not learn in school, unless you are the one teaching it.
