In general, one must be 16 to be employable. Until one is 18, there are federal limits on the number of hours that can be worked at a stretch and the number of hours that can be worked in a week. There are also restrictions during the school year on school nights. These rules are generally relaxed on family farms.

Persons under 18 are not allowed to operate dangerous machinery or work in otherwise hazardous environments, and except for family farms, this is a pretty unavoidable prohibition.

Once you're 18, you can pretty much do anything.

I believe you can get one when you are 16 years old, but you have to have your parents sign some paper work for you. You can get the paperwork at your public school which you attend. The school will need to keep a copy of the paperwork, and I believe you can work a maximum of 20 hours per week. When you turn 18, you are free to work as much as you want.
