You must find the lowest common denominator between the two. A quick way to find one common denominator (although, not always the lowest denominator) is to multiply the two denominators together.

In this case, multiplying the two denominators does in fact give you the lowest common denominator. (3 * 1) = 3. So for the fraction 5/1, since you multiply the denominator by 3, you must also multiply the numerator by 3.

Therefore, the common denominator between 4/3 and 5/1 is 3. The resulting fractions are 4/3 and 15/3.

The "top half of a fraction is called the numerator and the bottom half is called the denominator. So, in 4/3, 4 is the numerator and 3 is the denominator. In 5/1, 5 is the numerator and 1 is the denominator. The common denominator for 4/3 and 5/1 is the smallest number which can be divided by 3 and 1 (denominators) without leaving a remainder. In this example the common denominator is 3.

Example 2: 3/4 and 1/5.
4 and 5 are the denominators in this example. the smallest number that can be divided by both 4 and 5 without leaving a remainder is 20. 20 divided by 4 = 5 and 20 divided by 5 = 4

Take a/b as the first and c/d as the second. The common denominator wil be bc; for example, you want to add them:
a/b + c/d = (a/b)(d/d) + (c/d)(b/b) = ad/bd + cb/db
so that they both have the same denominator --> common, so that the answer to this trial Q is
(ad+cb)/db

im not sure if this is the answer your looking for but you have to first reduse the fraction.
then you have to add the number to the top as you did to the bottom.
ex.4/3=7/3
