The problem I always have with "either/or" questions like this is that they assume that you would ever face a situation where these were the only options, and that is really impossible. The question suggests that we have to have absolutely no control over changing anything, and would be forced to live just that one way, or the other.

There is no situation on the planet in which a person with fabulous wealth would NOT have a ton of friends, and plenty of fun and joy in life... UNLESS there was something seriously wrong with the person himself (Like poor old Howard Hughes, for example) By the same argument, if a person had "medium money" as you put it, he or she would either have a "medium money" income, or could at least get trained for something and get a job in that field of training. Once you g et out in the world and are working for a living, you are going to make friends, and have just as decent a life any any other average person. So really, the question has somewhat eliminated itself.

I HATE people, so I'd take the palace and money any day. However, as a natural progression, the relationship with those around (servants) may change into a psedo-friendship after a while if either party encouraged it.

I would rather be poor of money, and a roof over my head and be rich with friends and people. Than to be rich and all that goes with it. To have friends is to be richer than to have money, b/c money really can not buy everything

Me, I'm a people person, so I'll pick neither poor nor rich, which is what I have now. Besides it's hard to have a drumming circle by yourself
