The part you describe sounds like a COILPACK, not a distributor, for a six cylinder vehicle.

could be an older Chev. that Incorporated the coil into the cap, in a dark shop, pull a plug wire, insert a screwdriver in place of the plug, rest the screwdriver 1/4 inch off the valve cover and have an assistant turn the engine over, if you see spark the whole assembly is good , no spark , pull the cap & check the rotor for burn marks , the coil can be pulled off the cap for ohmmeter testing ( sorry don't know the # to look for but no continuity is a shure sign of a toasted coil) good luck, be safe.

rakel sounds correct, if you told us what car it was we could confirme it. but to ckeck a coil, all you need an ohms meter and the specs for that particular car. but if you are dealing with a no spark situtation and you do have a coilpack, you would would be probley be looking at a bad crankshaft sensor or a camshaft
sensor. a little more info and rakel or myself can probley point you in the right direction
