Victory said it all. But let me add that after a certain time of taking bullshit, people come to a fork in the road. They can either change themselves 180 degrees to someone or something that everyone approves of, or they become very active and pro-themselves, often resulting in extreme views and cold reaction to the oppression that brought them to Point B. Don't really think Frederick Douglass or Susan B. Anthony had too many smiley portraits themselves.
