I remember the Asterix series which also had Agrippa.

Can't recall a non-serious series specifically about the Romans.

do you mean the eagle series of books with Marco and Cato as the lead characters by the author Simon Scarrow

"The Eagle of the Ninth" by Rosemary Sutcliff fits the bill, but wasn't a series.
