After being brought back to life by Rosie (albeit with the help of the energy from the heart of the TARDIS) he helped defeat the Daleks. He was trying to get back to the Doctor but the TARDIS dematerialised before he got there. The presumption is that he went back to Earth to help rebuild society . However Torchwood which is just an anagram of Doctorwho, is not set in this time frame. The Captain is a time agent so will be able to visit a limited time spectrum, looks like he has done this in Torchwood. This is my interpretation only, I am sure to be corrected if not chastised by a more serious Torchwood devotee!

Although he was killed during the Daleks' invasion of Earth, Rose revived him (and presumably everyone else).

At this point in the timeline the Doctor doesn't seem to realise that Jack has returned to life and is behaving as though he believes Jack to be dead.

In the Torchwood series Jack's found his way back to the 21st century and to Cardiff, the location of the cosmic rift referred to in the 'new' Doctor Who show. How he did this is yet to be explained, but since he was a temporal agent in the 1940s when he first met the Doctor it's probable he knows a thing or two about time travel.

At the beginning of the Torchwood series it's revealed that Jack can't die, whether this is because of what Rose did to him or because of his exposure to the Nanomeds back when the Doctor first met him is going to be revealed in Torchwood eventually, but for now is part of the mystery of the new series.

It appears that Jack took on the job of rebuilding Torchwood after the Cyberman/Dalek transdimensional invasion so that he could use their resources to find the Doctor and get some answers for himself, and in the second episode of Torchwood it's revealed that he has the Doctor's new hand (cut off during the Christmas Invasion).

Can't remember very clearly, but he was killed by Daleks, and somehow brought back to life, and Doctor Who and co left him at that point.
Hope someone can clear it up more for you.
Raymo51 reminded me, the doctor expected to die, had told Rose to go home in Tardis, she opened up part of Tardis and absorbed the knowledge, returned to the doctor, had massive power, brought people including the captain back to life, destroyed the daleks, the doctor in saving her regenerated, this ended series 1 of the new series.

good question,as jack h swings the two techniques and jack s is effeminate yet immediately??, might jack h whisk him off to combat some extraterrestrial beings and sway him? may well be greater effective in the event that they have been the two immediately, then i ought to circulate on their adventures with them, yet hey ho
