I will say to keep warm and keep wild animals away. I will assume that they ate food raw as most animals. Then one night they were partying and some guy threw a bone with some meat left into the fire. The next morning someone woke up hungry and seen this in the fire and thought, what the heck, I am hungry and ate it. Realizing this new cuisine he had found, McDonald's was born.

Probably was used mostly to keep warm in the cold. Some insightful person may have discovered it was better to take a warm bath than to jump in a freezing stream, so they could have thought to warm bath water. Of course it the tub was made of wood, it would burn--so maybe not. They probably used fire to get rid of stinky, rotten refuse....who knows?
