You can try wireless option if Your hotel supports it. Hotels can provide internet wireline connection also. Or you can buy a prepaid card from any ISP in that region when connecting via digital phone lines.

Many Starbucks and big bookstores like Indigo, Chapters, Borders, Barnes & Noble etc. have free "Hotspot" wireless internet zones in their cafes. Just take your laptop to one of them and give it a try.

Other times, when you find public hotspots (usually labeled with a sign) that are fee-based, you open your web-browser and it will automatically take you to an account setup page where you enter your credit card / PayPal number and buy X number of minutes. Some hotels offer internet service in the rooms for a flat fee for the night but you have to ask for it when checking in.

If all else fails, leave your laptop in your room and head for an internet cafe.

For dial up just ask your Internet provider for a list of local phone numbers.Check them with a local operator to make sure they are local numbers. As for the hookup go to radio shack and get a little phone plug(splitter) that will fit in the wall jack and has two ports one for their phone and one for your laptop.Connect your laptop with an extension phone cord with jacks on both ends.Plug in to the splitter and the laptop. This is the cheapest way to go.If your set up for wireless You will need to get a code from the motel to get on line.I have all ways been able to connect with dial up but the dsl can be tricky and wireless can be insecure unless you know what you are doing.

Get a wireless network card or see if you already have one.

Check in Control Panel...click on the system icon. If control panel says "pick a category" then switch to classic view.

Once in system properties, click on hardware tab, then device manager. Look under network adapters and see if you have a wireless card. Make sure its enabled. If it has a red X then right click on it and click enable.

Now you can go anywhere that has wireless access.

Actually you can pick up other peoples service if say the neighbor has service and you live close....you can log on to the internet through them. Take your laptop and go to Starbucks if you want or just walk around around until you pick up a signal.

Most hotels have either wireless or wired internet for a fee ($10 or so). Places like starbucks and aiport also have connections

They also support a dialup connection over 56kbs modem if you have one build in.

Just a hunch but my DSL (bellsouth) line gives me 20hrs. 56k line to use anywhere in the U.S.on any land line. you don't change # on your cell when you travel, do you ? it's the same with lap top providing you have this set up. but dear if you have WIFI or not I think that my brother was right.
