It is sad how many people have come to believe that fully-automatic firearms are illegal. Really all but 7 states allow civilians to own fully-automatic weapons. You have to apply for a class 3 weapon permit, which is really just a $200(?) tax you pay to be allowed to purchase one. You then have to get that form signed by your local sheriff and get his permission to buy class 3 weapon. There are extensive background checks and costs to getting a fully-automatic weapon, but if you can afford it and you have a clean record, it is surely not impossible to legally get one. This link shows what states do and do not allow automatic firearms and other types of restrited guns.

You have several good answers: It's not going to happen. Allow me to clarify one thing. A machine gun transfer is not just a $200 tax stamp. The document is an ATF Form 4 NFA Weapon Transfer. National Firearms Act . A Class III Dealer handles the transaction. The weapon serial number is on the Form 4. There are questions similar to a 4473 but more. Police Chief or County Sheriff signs and you picture is attached. There are two of the Form 4. There are two sets of finger prints in th package sent to ATF. Several months go by and the Dealer receives one of the Form 4's back approved and he may then transfer the machine gun to you. The $200 tax stamp is attached to the document and looks very similar to a postage stamp but a pretty blue color. So, it's really a Form 4 not just a $200 Tax Stamp. And yes, in the end it's worth the trouble and wait.

All depends on state law, licensing, and time of manufacture and sale. A pre-ban automatic was ok if you were not a felon and if you had all applicable licenses. The assault weapons ban included weapons that had high capacity magazines, as well as assault rifles. That ban expired a few years ago. Not because Bush is in office like someone else told you. It was basically a feel good piece of legislation that didn't have too much of an effect.
I know that its ok to own fully automatic weapons though, my father has an AK, an Ingram, and an old m-16.

Most any gun is illegal for citizens to own in Australia. In the US, I think you can buy a semi-automatic AK47 with only a background check to make sure that you aren't a felon or in arrearages for child support payments.
But a full-auto AK47 would probably require a special license from your federal government. And one of those would cost some money, I'm sure.
Anyway, if you're not an infantryman, you seldom will have any use for full-auto or burst firing. A good semi-auto rifle with a large magazine will serve all of your self-defense needs... most of the time.
Military studies have found that pulling the trigger to shoot each bullet results in a higher percentage of target hits, as well as a shorter average time to hit a target. The reason for that is the recoil of the gun after the first bullet - it throws your aim slightly off for all the bullets that follow.

Nope, all you need is a license from the US government, a full background check, register the weapon.
See nothing to it.

I think Clinton had it banned, but since Bush has been in it's legal (I think), unless thats another brand of automatic. I know one type of automatic is legal, but I'm not exactly sure on the make, probley the one your talking about.
