You can get a teacup-style puppy. they are a little expensive but so cute! I also like tarantula's.
Some people are into frogs and such but they get kind of lame after a while.

How small? Like a hamster or gerbil small or like a cat small? Well, I would suggest a small dog, they are so cute but they have to be trained so that they don't go to the bathroom in the house and stuff. I have a male pomeranian poodle (pomapoo). He is so cute and he doesn't shed. He is about six pounds and that is as big as he will get. We trained him to ring a bell on the door when he has to go outside to go to the bathroom and it works really well. There are smaller dogs or other animals if you prefer something smaller.

Get a Chihuahua. That way there is no cage to clean and cleaning up outside is minimal. These dogs are more intelligent than people give them credit for. Some of them have been trained to be the ears for deaf people. They do not eat much and are really very sweet.
If that is out of the question, you could get a rat, but get one that is young -- their life expectancy is about 3 years. They can be mean if not treated lovingly.

Do you really want to keep a little animal in a case for your own entertainment? I don't agree with pets really, but definately go for something like a gerbil/mouse/rat if you're so inclined (rats are best in this category, and not "dirty" at all), or perhaps just fish. You can get a budgie for about £10 / $6.

The all time favorite small animal is a CAT. Anything smaller, like a bird or a hamster, a person just can't relate to. But a cat is loving.

Teacup poodle or chihuahua
Here are a few links for small puppies

Take a look at the cuties and you can decide what type dog you want. I have to say though be careful when they are that small. We had a guest at our house who stepped on one of the puppies... I want say what happened. Just be careful
They should not be a household where there are alot of people. I recommend a household of 1-2 people only

If you haven't an idea what you are interested in, do some research as to what kind of animal might fit your lifestyle. Only you know how much time you have for a pet, how much interest you have in training or how capable you are of caring for a pet. If you can't figure it out, start with a goldfish and see if you like owning a pet.

Dwarf hamsters are really good pets. they are easy to clean up after and they are so cute I have had 10 hamsters and they were all really fun animals and they are cheap to take care of. Ferrits would be a good small pet but they can smell pretty bad if you dont keep them really clean and if you let them out they are very nosy and love going through things. Mine love to tear up toilet paper

Well it depends, if you're home a lot, if you are you should get a bird, they need a lot of attention and they're really lovable, if you're not home a lot you should get a rabbit, they don't need very much attention but will love the attention you give them when you are home, but you have to remember that they do drink a lot of water and you have to clean their cage about once or twice a week and they need to be fed in the morning and before you go to bed.

Rats! They're super sweet and undeserving of their bad reputation.
They're the perfect size in my opinion, because there is enough to grab and not feel like you might break them but they can still be kept in a cage (decent size cage though, 12x24 for each rat is a good size). They groom themselves almost more than cats and mine will groom me. They're trainable like dogs, unlike hamsters. They make the cutest sound when they're happy, they're grinding their teeth, but it's adorable. They're so much fun to watch. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent watching mine play.
