I don't like any of them I simply like Avast. Here you have more free antivirus programs:

AVG - mcaffees and nortons are both resource pigs.
I've never had a problem with AVG - but I can't tell you how many freinds computers I've had to baby through removing either of those dingbat programs.
Both are attempting to provide more to justify the costs - on an antivirus level they do the trick - but with everything else those applications push on the user - it's not worth the headaches you will be offloading onto friends who are attempting to fix broken computers.
I use AVG in conjuction with ZoneAlarm and AdAware - all are free for personal use - and all have a professional version if you believe you have to pay for protection - usually the case, however all use the free version as a form of word of mouth advertising. As a result they are inclined to give decent performance, other wise no one would recommend either to their work places.
Another point is that none are the resource hogs that nortons or mcaffees are. (lower case on purpose :P )

You must take everything into consideration..
Do you have a super computer? If so speed really isnt your problem and you just want the virus out no matter what, so MacAfee
If speed is a concern for you, then AVG is much faster, but doesn't detect as good..
Can you afford it? I'm not trying to call you poor but really, why waste the money if you don't really need state of the art protection? Do you have credit card #s and buisness info on your computer? Then you want something that gets the virus out and prevents it, that would be MacAffee but pricy too...
If all you have is just home photos and maybe some club passwords for forums and such then I think AVG would be enough...
But do take a look at this...
It's a test on virus yah yah...
Raw Test
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82
Review for the test
http://tech.cybernetnews.com/2006/09/04/and-the-best-antivirus-is/
But hell I'll take AVG over MacAffee any day, MacAffee is a resource hog and will slow your computer down like a birdpoop on a hot pan... But again AVG isnt as good in detection rate...
Go Kaspersky, Nod32, Avast, AVG.. Pick out of any of those.. First 2 are expensive but do a good job, last 2 are free and also do a good job...
Oh and AVG is starting to take away its Free Edition starting on Jan. I think... You gotta research that tho.. I use Avast for now...

Mark T (above) is absolutely correct. AVG Free Edition is extremely efficient. It has met or exceeded operational criteria of all the main 'Virus Test' labs, scoring as well as Norton, et al. It's latest version (Version 7.5) is available for downloading now; in fact, I updated today.
I have been using AVG Free Version for over five years and although only three virus attacks have occurred in that time, AVG handled them with consummate ease.
Some one has remarked that 'you only get what you pay for' - well, if you want a few more bells and whistles AVG will sell you AVG Professional, but for ordinary users, the free version is first class. It automatically checks the system on boot up, checks for updates on a daily basis, allows the user to set times when an automatic check is to be carried out, and certifies outgoing e-mails as virus free to reassure your recipients.
Why pay heaven knows how much for the 'other names' when AVG Free is so good?!

I use McAfee Enterprise-8.0i, this is a corporate version of McAfee AVS. I find McAfee retail versions hard work.
The trouble is the AVS manufacturers want to sell product, and so produce many different flavours to tempt consumers.
McAfee AVS consists of three parts: the engine currently 5100, the DAT files currently 4893 and the front end, that is the interface you use to configure the software.
The McAfee DATS (updated daily) contain all the signatures for viruses, trojans and spyware. McAfee Engine contains the code to use the DATs and hook into your operating system. With most of their products all that changes is the user interface, the more you pay the more features you get to use in the engine.
From a users point of view (me) All that is required is Anti Virus Software that hooks into the OS and stops all the variations of viruses and malware. Instead what happens is a variation in products that appear to do similar things, are difficicult to configure and leave the user completely confused.
To answer your question. If I didn't have McAfee Enterprise, I would use AVG, I have read lots of good reports about it and it works. If it wasn't any good you would soon here about the problems.

AVG seems to trap far more nasties than McAffee or Norton. I used to run different ones on different PC's for a while when I had several running for business. AVG found EVERYONE the others did - and more besides.
I also use AVG-free for my home PC - and (so far) several years don the line it hasn't let me donw once. On the other hand, I seem to hear endless tales about the other ones faling.
AVG all the way. Excellent product for business use - and the free one of personal use is a truly fab deal.
The mpst effective for free.

I even have continually used AVG. do not forget that as quickly as you utilize AVG and a sparkling virus comes out they deliver you a warning despite the fact that it may take them 3-5 days to enhance this methodology for the removing of the hot virus. in case you like this software they now sell it at workplace Max, you need to purchase it in an prolonged time or you may save making use of their unfastened version.

Nothing comes free without any cost. Go for McAffee or the paid version of AVG.

The question will soon not be relevant, as AVG are stopping providing a free solution soon.
Of all the anti virus programs I have ever used, Sophos is the one that has impressed me most.

well.. AVG is free, McAfee paid, unless you have an Internet Service Provider like AOL or Comcast giving it for free. Go for McAfee if you have access to it or dont mind paying else take AVG. AVG is definitely faster.
