New Zealander-Australian country music singer Keith Lionel Urban, born 26 October 1967, won the male vocalist of the year at Nashville's Country Music Awards “The 40th Annual CMA Awards” broadcast live from the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Downtown Nashville on the ABC Television Network last November 6 of this year .
Though he was not present to accept his Award, his friend Ronnie Dunn read a letter from Urban. “I’m pained not being here tonight,” Urban wrote. “I thank you from the bottom of my heart and I look forward to coming home and seeing you soon.” It is his third year in a row to win such award.
Keith Lionel Urban was born in Whangarei, North Island, New Zealand then moved to Australia with his family before the age of two. He signed with EMI in Australia in 1990 and recorded his first solo album which charted four No. 1 country hits in Australia. He moved to Nashville in 1992 and became the front man for "The Ranch" that released one album in 1997. He disbanded the group to pursue a solo career.
He fell on cocaine addiction in the 90's and got rehabilitated and in 2000 Urban released his self-titled American debut which produced three top 5 hits and secured for him the Top New Male Vocalist Award at the 2001 Academy of Country Music Awards.
His singles and albums had been highly successful on top of the charts. His live performances and tours had continued his meteoric rise to fame. He received various nominations and won many awards. On August 21, 2006, Keith made history when his new single "Once in a Lifetime" became the highest-debuting country single (#17) in the 62-year history of Billboard's country charts. On 19 October 2006 Urban checked himself into a rehabilitation center for alcohol abuse cancelling his appearances on Rove Live, the 2006 ARIA Awards and the 2006 CMA Awards.
The Country Music Association Awards also known as the CMA Awards, are voted on by business members of the Country Music Association, with first CMA awards presented at an untelevised ceremony in Nashville's Municipal Auditorium in 1967. MALE: Jim Reeves. There isn't anyone in the same league. He had, without question, the best voice that was ever recorded and released on a country record. There are certainly others that can convey more emotion (e.g., Hank Williams on "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," George Jones), but for technical and vocal supremacy, it's Jim Reeves, hands down. FEMALE: Rose Maddox. She had a good voice, but it was the emotions she could draw out of you with her voice that set her above everyone else.
