ps2 is an abreviation for Playstation Two.
It is a game console that hooks up to your TV, one plug for power(outlet) and then the red-yellow-white plugs(TV).
The second console was made better then the first Playstation.
While you would still need a memory card to save games(which isn't a lot of space, especially comparing to the XBOX) the playstation 2 offered better graphics then its original.
Also the playstation 2 could play playstation 1 games(however for you to save you would need a memory card from the playstation 1, not from playstation2) - play music(but it would not burn cds unlike the XBOX) and play movies(XBOX does this, but you need a special addition piece and a remote).
Now with the playstation 3 talk going on, people are saving up hoping to be able to get one come christmas.
