What is the U.N. doing about the genocide in Darfur?
What they do about everything else..They are siting around in 1000 dollar suits paid for by American Tax dollars talking about the problem.

In July 2004, the UN passed resolution 1556 which told the Sudanese government to disarm the Janjaweed militia and prosecute the leaders who had carried out human rights abuses. It also threatened to consider further action if this was not carried out.
In September 2004, the UN Security Council passed 1564 declaring their "grave concern" that the Sudanese government had not complied with resolution 1556.
In November 2004, the UN Security Council passed resolution 1574 saying that it might consider "taking appropriate action against any party failing to fulfill its commitments." It also called on the World Bank to provide developmental aid and debt relief the the Sudanese government who wa carrying out these atrocities.
I could go on with the rest, but its pretty much the same. The UN has basically shook they finger at the Sudan, promised them monitary rewards for stopping the genocide, and threatened to consider taking action to stop them. Classic UN behavior in the face of real crisis.

UN, as useful as it is, has to have national backing, or international forcedown your throat backing to move into sovereign territory. It's not like they can just go there.
However, all governments have pressed and cajoled the Sudan government into accepting the UN force (remember, there is already an African Union force present, which is underfunded).
There are negotiations, and it might be that Sudan wont accept the UN presence, but that we will have to make do with the very much weaker African Union force, and possible other foreign troops with the mandate of the AU.

You are right. Unless a region is strategically important the big powers usually don't show much concern. UN is also dependent on industrial and economic powers for its funding. Now I think UN wants to substitute African Union peace keeping force with its own but the government of Sudan is against it.

You can go to www.un.org (the un's web site and find out in detail. You may have to browse around a bit to find it, but if the un is involved it'll be on the site someplace.

That's quite a controversial topic there. I'm sorry I can't tell you what the UN is doing, but I can tell you what MTV is doing.
Judge for yourselves...
