Actually ethernet cords don't fit into phone sockets. They quite a bit larger. (CAT 5 CABLE)

Only DSL runs internet through a regular phone style cord, and its not ethernet.

There is also USB cables and of course the COAX. The Coax cable has a screw on the end of it. It threads on for cable tv's and broadband connections to the modem.

the thick round wire for cable TV and video is called COAX, short for co-axial.

the flat wire for your phone is called "phone wire" the connectors at the ends have 4 gold contacts and are called RJ-11 connectors.

the two center connectors are line one, and the two on the outside are line two. this is usually flat (parallel) but sometimes can be found with twisted pairs inside.

The twisted pair cable is thicker, maybe this is what you are asking about. The function is the same, but reduced interference (see below)

the wider version is called ETHERNET cable, the most common is CATEGORY 5 or simply CAT5 there is also a CAT6. The type of wire is called "unshielded twisted pair" there are 8 wires inside twisted into 4 pairs. the connectors on the ends are called RJ-45 have 8 gold contacts, but only two of the pairs (pin 1 and 2 and 3 and 6) are used in 10 or 100 meg ethernet.

the twist prevents electromagnetic fields from inducing interference on the wires.because a when the wires twist 180 degrees the induced current is also changed 180 degrees and so it cancels itself.

Microphone cables, because they carry very low level signals) usually have an additional SHIELD braid (or foil) to further prevent interference.
