Do you have a backyard, and can you build them a habitat? Tortoises are ALOT of work and need alot of space (they get BIG) - you need to do major research before considering one as a pet. With proper care, they can live a long time - possibly outlive you. A tortoise is a major commitment in time and money. As for where you can find them, Petsmart usually carries certain types.

I have a russian Tortoise and it cost me $450 Canadian from PJ pets (canadian also). You don't neccesarily NEED a backyard, but it would be nice for the tortoise to have its own littel vacation outside.
They carry salmonella, but they can be easily avoided if you don't kiss them or eat without washing your hands.
Tortoises can be very cute :)

Turtles can carry salmonella, you have to remember to keep them away from kids, and wash your hands after touching them.
