First turn the 3 into a fraction like so 3/1
Next turnthe improper fraction into a proper fraction like so: (72*1) + 31 = 103/72
Now find the least common denominator of the 2 fractions [that's the bottom number of the fraction in case you don't remember], in this case since 1 is a prime number the least common denominator is 72.
Since had to multiple 1 by 72 we must also to the same to 3 to get 216.
So now your fraction problem looks like this: 216/72 - 103/72
Subtract the two top numbers [called the numerator]: 216-103 = 113, therefore 216/72-103/72 = 113/72 = 1 41/72

3 = 72*3 / 72 = 216 / 72
1 31/72 = (72*1 + 31) / 72 = 103 / 72
216 / 72 - 103 / 72 = 113 / 72 = 1 41/72
