Mainly during the French Reign of Terror under Robespierre, from June 1793 to July 1794--though the first person executed by guillotine was highwayman Nicolas J. Pelletier April 25, 1792; and of course, King Louis XVI was beheaded in January of 1793. The last person executed this way in France was Hamida Djandoubi on September 10, 1977, four years before the death penalty was abolished in 1981.
the guillotine was also used in Germany during the Empire period and the Weimar Republic (1871-1933) and was the preferred method of executing convicted criminals (as opposed to political death sentences) in the Nazi period; and it was used in Sweden until 1910. The guillotine was considered for use in the united States until the electric chair was invented in the 19th Century by an employee of Thomas Edison.

The guillotine is a device used for carrying out executions by decapitation. It consists of a tall upright frame from which is suspended a heavy blade. This blade is raised with a rope and then allowed to drop, severing the victim's head. The device is noted for long being the main method of execution in France and, more particularly, for its use during the French Revolution.

The guillotine was from then on the only legal execution method in France until the abolition of the death penalty in 1981, apart from certain crimes against the security of the state, which entailed execution by firing squad.
