You go to any gas station, grocery store, and many other places. Tell them you want to purchase a money order. If you wish to buy something through the mail but don't want to send cash or a personal check, it's much safer. Most places charge $.49 to $.99 in addition to the amount you want the money order for. Then you fill it out just like a check, and drop it in the mail. You also get a receipt with a tracking number, which makes it easy to track the money in case there is a dispute, or it gets lost in the mail. To my knowledge, you do not have to be over 18 to purchase a money order. However, you cannot buy a money order with a check or credit card, so take cash.

You can go to just about any grocery store or post office and purchase one for the amount that you want to send. No you do not have to be of age to buy one. The person who receives a postal money order can cash it at the post office with an ID. The grocery store money order can be cashed at the bank with an ID..
