I am interested in using Skype to communicate with people but am not real sure about the whole process. I know you download the program for free ... what I don't know is this:

does it cost anything to make calls?
is it just other Skype users you can call, or can you reach a land line or cell phone using Skype?
do you need a special telephone to use Skype or does a regular house phone work?

Any other info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Skype is a VoIP (voice over internet provider) phone service. You download the program, get a microphone for your computer, and then you are ready to go.

As of right now, it is free to call landlines and cell phones with Skype. Starting on Jan. 1, there will be a charge of approximately 2 cents a minute to call landlines.

It will always be free to call other Skype users.

Like I said, Skype is a VoIP phone. You don't have to go through a regular phone. There are Skype phones out there, but all you really need is a microphone.

You can also buy a phone number for your Skype account so other people can call you from landlines.

One potential problem is the sound quality. Sometimes there is an echo, sometimes a delay. Overall though, I've had great success w/ Skype

It doesnt cost anything to call people that have signed up to Skype, but you have to buy a certain amount of credit to call real phones.

You can call users and landlines, but you have to pay to call landlines.

You don't need a phone to use Skype, its optional.

P.S. Make sure you dont forget your username, and check www.skype.com for more info.

You load it and set it up. calls are free from skype to skype - even internationally. But to call a land line there is a charge.
