In the book farenheight 451, firemen were people who burned books for a living, and if they caught anyone with books, they would go and burn their houses down to a crisp. So my question to you is what do books mean to our world, and why should we appreciate them?

Books are about ideas. Without the sharing of ideas we become mindless followers. Notice how most of our other forms of entertainment become more mindless(reality television, big pointless action films, etc.)

Books are powerful--they can persuade, uplift, depress, instruct...the list goes on. Bradbury's book brings that point home.

Once a book is printed, it exists. You might say "Duh!!" but think of all the electronic resources that are lost due to a single wrong keystroke, or a web site no longer being maintained. Books represent permanence in a society that is increasingly disposable and obsessed with making older things obsolete. Why do you think there are so many new kinds of iPods?

And regardless of its age or worth, a book goes anywhere you go without batteries or an AC converter. When the power goes out, all you need is a flashlight or a candle and your book is still there to read. Prisoners and soldiers alike tear a paperback into sections so that many can read the same book in stages.
Try to doing that with a downloaded book on a PDA.

Man is the only animal that can read. Books are a daily reminder of how far we've come as a species, but they haven't changed all that much from the very first materials used to record written language centuries ago. A book is a piece of history in your hands.

Thanks for a great question.

Very good question and I'm glad Farenheit 451 reached you. Books summarize human knowledge and experience.

Nonfiction books record facts, mostly dry ones, necessary to progress in that particular field. They are science or history or teaching tools.

It is in fiction we find the greater human experience. This is where we can experience things we'll never get to experience for ourselves. We can be medieval knights of the realm with Howard Pyle or Sir Walter Scott or go to the moon with Ben Bova. We can be a governess in Wuthering Heights or achieve a scientific breakthrough in Asimov's novels. Fiction teaches us to aspire to things we don't have today. It is no wonder that Montague chose a novel to preserve.

In the world of Farenheit 451, the people were being dumbed down by an oppressive government. A people who can't read or write find it harder to share ideas and learn from others. They are easier to control.

You cannot have democracy without literacy. Protect your right to read.

Books are read for information and for pleasure. Biographies tell us about the lives of people today and people who lived long ago. History allows how to see how progress has changed our world either for better or for worse. Fiction stirs the creative juices and introduces us to a variety of entertaining stories. I even enjoy many children's books, especially the classics. Of course, there is also the Holy Bible which offers up more than the heart can think or imagine. Books keep our world standing on solid ground and it would be absolutely disastrous to live in a world without them.
