In the San Bernardino mountains. You should be able to reach them in about two hours.

Southern California has many places where it snows. There are mountain ranges that receive snow even in desert regions. Here in the Mojave high desert we get snow during the winter often. In the winter of 2004 we had 9 inches of snow within 48 hours. Right now it is 9:35am and 91 degrees and will likely reach 110 degrees by noon. But we have air coolers -- not air conditioners -- that have water in them to keep cool with and so it's comfortable. But there's lots of great ski resorts close by.

In December you are not necessarily guaranteed snow in Laguna, Julian, Mt Palomar or even Big Bear...except maybe for the man made stuff on the ski slope in Big Bear and Running Springs. Mammoth is probably the only place you might definately see snow, but that's about a 5-6 hr drive from SD. Also, if we do get a big storm you can try Idyllwild as well. The top of Mt. San Jacinto I believe is over 10,000 ft., whereas Big Bear is more in the range of 7,000ft. We're expecting a mild El Nino this year, so it might rain more than snow.

Sometimes it will snow closer to San Diego in the foothills...sometimes even on the Grapevine (the mountains going north up towards Bakersfield).

I believe that the closest snow that would be snow to ski or snowboard on would be Mammoth.

In the Sierra Nevada below about 1,000 meters elevation, precipitation usually falls as rain, whereas above that elevation it falls as snow in winter.
