Best free for paid?
Free I would have to say is a toss up between Avast and AVG
If your computer master(well not really "master) go for Avast and if you need more protection go Avast...
If you just want things clean and simple on your interface go AVG, if you don't see as much protection go AVG
Kaspersky and Nod32 is the world leading brand.. Paid that is.. Expensive but all worth it..
AOL Active Virus Shield (100days) uses the same engine as Kasperskys..
Here take a look at this..

And yes Norton and Macafee ARE CRAP! Well Macaffe is ok, but slows down your computer to crap... Norton is worse. I use Norton Internet Security 2005, 2006 and well I never know what I was missing out on until I got AVG.. Now I have Avast... But AVG and AdAware/Spybot SD detected 50 crap that Norton missed..
Only reason it doesn't slow down your computer is that you must have a good processer and RAM.. because I only a Intel 4, 3.00ghz, 1.5GB of Ram... And screwed my computer to peices..

If it's free it's crap. No support.
No virus program works 100% i've used McAfee for years and it's worked fantastic as long as you keep it updated. I also recommend using a backup such as Norton or PC-Cillin. Make sure you get a full suite and not just an anti-virus. Anti-viruses won't do jack for adware or spyware. If you're on a budget go with Sunbelt software they make good products or Computer Associates most all the anti-virus companies share info.

The only 100% failsafe method of not contracting a virus is ... ABSTINENCE. That's right, stay off the internet, don't do email, just use your Dell for word processing, spreadsheets, office stuff, but NO surfing or electronic communications.
Now if you just can't control your urge to get online, then do this:
1. Have a firewall
2. Antivirus software. I like Avast (free download)
3. Don't open any suspicious or unsolicited/unexpected emails from people you don't know
4. Run ad aware (free download from Lavasoft)
5. Use a browser other than MSIE. Firefox is good. Opera is better. These have built-in pop-up blockers.

NO anti-virus can ever be relied upon to furnish any the place close to one hundred% risk-free practices. None of them do, unfastened or paid. maximum in basic terms come across approximately 80 5% to ninety 5% of all prevalent viruses. while a sparkling virus is released, NO signature-based anti-virus will come across it for countless hours as much as countless days. some on no account will come across a particular virus. And over 1200 new variations of viruses and different malware are created with the help of the "black-hats" daily. you're able to evaluate an anti-virus software to be your "final line of protection". risk-free internet surfing and downloading practices (NO warez, NO P2P, NO Limewire, NO torrents, sorry) alongside with retaining your abode windows and all your put in application with all severe updates and protection patches could be your frontline protection.

Norton and McAfee are both resource hogs and slow down computers. You do need other protection apart from anti virus and firewall.
For good, free and recommended security programs, please go here
http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/showflat...
I recommend AVG as an anti virus, although eTrust's 12 month free trial is excellent (I'm using it and am extremely impressed).
If you need other programs, go for Zone Alarm firewall, AVG anti spyware (formerly Ewido) and SpywareBlaster.
If you click on the names in that list I gave you and it will take you to the official download site.
Please ensure that you keep them all updated for full protection and check for any updates when you first download them.

Zone Alarm 6.0.1.
This provides you with the option to install both a secure firewall and a stable antivirus. Or alternatively you can install them individually. You get automatic updates that installs new virus definitions for your computer.
This has never let me down. I've used it for years!!!
Hope this helps...

Use protection just like having sex. Any unsafe act on your computer will result in a shut down.
Practice good Computer habits with good protection and you should be fine, but nothing is 100% accurate even Condoms have a rating of 99.9% you won't get a disease.
