My fiance's father will not let them go around the garden when they are on their period, because he thinks it will kill the vined vegetables (tomatoes,cucumbers, etc.). They are also not allowed to help with the canning of vined vegetables.

I don't know if it is true, but I have heard the same stories you have been told.
Years ago, I had a friends mother who wouldn't let me near the garden if it was that time of the month. She also had the fears of helping when it came to canning the tomatoes. She said it would either spoil the batch or blow the lids off the jars. She always added it had happened to her in the past.
As for fact or fiction - I honestly don't know - I have never had a problem with my tomato plants outside, but that is about as much gardening I do anymore.
I do thank you for the laugh and look back - and to see some myths / non myths (as I am not 100% sure) live on forever.

lol...that is one of the most ridiculous things i have ever heard....no it is not true.....but if there is a religious base to this superstition then just play along with it......don't rock the boat since you are now sitting in it...lol....
