Note: I just had a pap about two weeks ago and everything checked out and was fine. But this problem started occuring a day or two after my pap, so I didn't get to tell my gynecologist about it.

Actually the spotting may be a result of the Pap. The doctor scrapes the cervix to get the cells and sometimes the cervix is a little irritated from the scraping.

Normally, I wouldn't expect the spotting to last this long...unless you have what is called a "friable" cervix. That is a cervix that is easily irritated. Often the doctor will mention this during the Pap...but not necessarily. When indicated, a friable cervix can be "toughened" up with a simple in-office procedure.

My first recommendation would be to simply call the doctor's office and leave a message saying something like "I have been spotting since the PAP...could this be connected?" Then go from there based on the doctor's (or his nurses's) response.

How soon after the pap did you have sex? My GYN has clipped a specimen a tad too deep before. I've spotted after my visit & I know a group of other women that have as well. Try not to have sex so soon after your exam. Inform your doctor's office about the spotting so it can be documented. I worked in the health field for two decades. Currently, the practice of collecting better pap results has lead to many women "spotting" after an exam. Think about the fact that a small internal area has been altered...Let it heal..This is how I take care of myself, once a year. In addition, it's better not to have sex a day or two before your exam. Good Luck

If you have not already contacted your ob-gyn, please do so. I had a similar problem and was told there was a tiny blood filled pimple that would "pop" afterwards, which was just a nuisance, no health problem. Sometimes, after an exam, there is a little spotting due to the instrument used which may have scraped the lining of the cervix. You may already have received the results of your exam which could alleviate major health concerns.
