Alright, both guys above have no idea what they are talking about, especially Georgie Porgie.

An engine from a 99-00 Si (B16A2) will fit and work properly in your car. When you go to buy the new engine it will come with the proper ECU and wiring harness, so the wiring is not a big deal and as long as you keep the stock catalytic converter you might have a chance at passing an emissions test.

What you will need are different motor mounts so it will fit correctly. Hasport makes the mounts you will need.

Also the Si valve cover is not red...its black..the difference is that VTEC is in big letters and dohc is in smaller letters under it. I would know...I own a 2000 Civic Si Coupe.

Basically, you can easily put a B16 in your HX quite easily and everything will function just fine. Just make sure your getting all the parts you need when you purchase the engine...Transmission ,Engine Wiring Harness, Required Cables, ECU, Distributor, Intake Manifold, Exhaust Manifold, Injectors and Fuel Rail, Alternator, A/C, Power Steering Pump, Brackets and Sensors.
Ther might be a few things you will need to purchase afterwards but they will be minimal.

An Si engine would take a lot of modification in order to work in the HX coup. The wiring harness is different as well as the computer that controls fuel and ignition. You may also have problems getting it to pass emissions inspection.

you will not be able to pass the smog test. the hx is a economy car therefore you swapping in the b16 will ruiin your chances of passing. that hardest part of that swap is the harness to the ecu, the harness for the hx will not plug into the p2t(b16a2 ecu). you would probably want to move to obd1 with a jumper harness and a p28 ecu mapped to the b16. everything else will bolt right up. you dont need the mounts but it is recommended. ive done many swaps and the b16 will swap into any 96-00 civic without replacement mounts. goto osakajdmmotors.com or hmotorsonline.com and buy the complete swap. its your choice on the obd2 b16a2 or the obd1 b16a, they will both work but i think the obd1 swap will save you alot of work and hassle. e-mail me if you have any questions and i would be happy to help you solve problems regarding a swap in your hx.
goto honda-tech.com and just read up on the forums and all your answers most likely will be on there.
the only valve cover that is red is the b18c5

SI engines has different wiring configuration for racing instrumentation & control. You may be able to install it to your coupe but all the functionalities may not be able to be utilized. You would know that the engine is for Si or SiR series if the cam cover is red. Next it is usually DOHC. Although I have not seen an Si or SiR with SOHC. Aside from that the existing engine support can not be used for the Si or SiR engine because it usually breaks when Si or SiR engine is in full power. Aside from that braking system is different. It can be done but you have a lot of things to consider. Good luck.

easiest method imo is to easily hop interior the vehicle, turn the main on and seek for the ABS easy. 1999-2000 Civic Si have not got ABS and 1996-2000 Civic EX does have ABS. So, ABS = EX. or you ought to pop the hood and look on the vast DOHC lettering that the Honda Civic SI might have on that is engine. Engine codes are D16Y8 for the EX and B16A2 is the SI engine. however the one hundred% gurantee'd thank you to nicely known what the vehicle incredibly is is to look on the VIN's like Jeff reported and verify the code on the engine.
