2. Because life is so hard, when you're young and have everything handed to you on a platter...

Self-inflicted pain, mutilation, damage is all highly debated in psychology, BUT generally the answer goes like this:
A healthy human mind is always flexible, growing, changing and experiencing many different ways to be throughout the day.
People with emotional issues tend to experience a set pattern of only some emotions all the time. Doing this is a way to make everything, life, their issues, fears, success, etc. less real and easier to ignore.
That's how people with issues often cope.
Cutting is a deeply personal act for them because after feeling less than real for a long while, they can feel something very real and that moment of reality can be very gratifying.
This might be hard for some people to understand, so think of it this way.
You've had a really hard life and then someone utterly violates you. To protect yourself from the memory and from the new, scary and uncertain world that the violation made you realize exists, you can wear a full body mask and hide your pain, issues, everything away from everyone including yourself.
That way, no one has to know, no one ever has to make you face it again.
But to stay that way, you have to always make sure that mask is perfect, stronger, and you have to wear it ALL the time.
You'll wear it for so long you forget what it's like to feel real, and you don't want to ever take it off to feel real air, real sunlight on your skin because of what waits for you: the memories, the terror, the pain and guilt of hiding for so long when society tells you that you should always get through your issues.
So to feel real again, just for a moment without taking off that mask, you can peel a little of it back and with that little bare spot, make yourself feel the most intense reality you can: a little cut for pain; pain so real and "safe" (emotionally), it feels so good.
It isn't just "emos," it's whoever has an issue that they never want to deal with.
And not just cutting either. Food, TV, computers, sex, prayer, everything and anything can become a replacement for cutting.
So long as it feels real enough and can distract you from the pain and lonliness of wearing a mask.

I saw what some other people have written... and it disgusts me. It has been proven by experts that cutting is not actually "attention seeking", and it certainly doesn't always mean a person is suicidal. Cutting is a way to relieve stressful feelings that the person may have inside them, and often the cutter may not intend to die or seek attention. Stressful feelings only get worse if people are tagged as attention seekers, so hence they feel even worse inside. People who cut need help and support, not hatred and mocking from others.
And it's not only emo people who cut.

people do it because it hurts so much on the inside and they have no way of expressing there pain in any other way. you can cut but not be emo and you can be emo and not cut.
emo =emotional
cutting= emotional problem
sometimes cutting is just done to get attention which is stupid and sometimes its used to hurt someone else

1- just because they cut doesnt mean they are emo
2- my boyfriend cuts, and that's because his parents just moved him from Canada to Isreal, after spending his entire life here in Canada. Plus, things were finally great for him. Him and I were really happy together, he had friends who would take a bullet for him, and he was doing well in school. He cuts because he couldn't deal with everything. Things were falling apart there. Him and I were fighting a lot, his friends here turned his back on him, his family gave up on him. Cutting was his way to let all the pain inside out.
3- its a way of relief. If you have so much emotional pain inside of you, you can't see it. By cutting yourself, you can see the cuts, and bruises and scars, and its a way to finally SEE the pain you feel
4- some people do it for attention. They feel like they NEED people to notice them, so they start cutting in places they know people will find out. It's not because they need to be the cnter of the universe, its because there's something wrong, they feel neglected, maybe because of abuse at home
5- there are SO many more reasons, but I can't list them all cause that would take forever.
AND AGAIN, just because they cut, deosn't mean they are emo. They don't cut because they are emo, unless they are posers trying to BE emo. MOst people who cut don't cut to be emo. They cut because they are really hurting badly inside.

They cut because it releves stress n if they are having problems at home or school cuting gives them a way to just get rid of it all. I went to school with a kid that cut and He was my friend and he would start to cut during school if he got angree or mad at some one or somthing and he said it was because it helped him deal eith what ever was going on around him. Cuting is bad for you but for some people it makes them feel better. If you see someone cuting dont asume that they are emo because that kid that was my friend he wasnt emo he was just like everyone else. But people judged him. People stoped hanging out with him and just started taqlking bout him. My other friend cuts herself because her little sister drievs her insain and somethime she cuts her self when she is having an episode. She is also bypolor. But yea if someone cuts them self its not because there emo it might be problems at home or school or friends.

Pain-replacement, I suspect. It distracts from whatever they're feeling inside. Sad, isn't it?

It brings them emotional relief, and it also relaxes them. It's sorta like their getting high, basically something to release pressure and relieve them of anything that's killing them inside...
