The Beatles. Nobody else wrote, in such a short period of time, such a vast volume of music of consistent quality, breaking new ground in sounds, thoughtful lyrics, memorable melodies, and diverse range. The Beatles of 1963 hardly sound like the Beatles of 1969, but both are brilliant.

Pink Floyd, simply for the fact of how many albums they released (27, at least), and how many years they were around. Their music is timeless.

very tough question. i could not really choose between elvis costello and david bowie. costello wins for pure prolific songwriting genius and bowie wins for unique groundbreaking innovation in the musical artform. impossible to pick between them. and then there's prince. and if we start to include groups, the beatles, the smiths. oh, why did you have to torment me like this ?
