People generally vote for there own district in local elections. Since this was not a national election (Presdiential) why did so many come out as Democratic?

Because one of the big problems with Republicans these days is that they're forced to do everything for the benefit of the Republican party, rather than for the benefit of their constituents.

People realized this, and elected Democrats because they will actually do what they are supposed to do... or at the very least they will not be punished for doing so.

Well you can read any poll you want, but the fact is, the American people wants to get rid of incumbents, and it showed in this election. It wasnt neccessarily the dems who came out. Republicans and Independents as well, are ready for a change in leadership, and tired of all the partisan politics. It would be advantagious for our politicians to take note, that americans want our own issues resolved in a timely manner. There will be other elections.

For the most part dems voted as dems and reps voted as reps. The difference was the indies, many of whom in the past went with reps. Their displeasure with Bush tainted enough republican candidates (guilt by association) to swing the elections in the dems favor.

This was a national election, in that people were voting for Congressional seats.

Congress is at least equally as important, if not moreso, than the President.

Because they were fed up with Republicans.
Senators are not small fish.
