What a very sensible question!! I'm so pleased there is at least one person who is not going to get up to their eyeballs in debt for the sake of commercialised Xmas, well done!
Do you have any games you can dig out? And I don't mean computer ones? I am assuming that you have kids and are desperate to make Christmas memorable for them? As a child, (my family were very hard up!) my best Christmases involved having all the family around, watching my terribly old fashioned Grand parents get a little tipsy on sherry, everyone wearing paper hats from the crackers and then getting stuck into simple board games such as snakes and ladders. The TV never went on, and although I know we had presents, strangely enough these do not figure in my good memories. I really feel for you as Christmas these days puts a lot of pressure on 'less affluent' people when the kids are demanding the latest toys. Make up stockings from the pound shops, most toys have lost interest value half way through January anyway, so at least you would be able to get quantity rather than quality here.
Good luck!!

Don't know if you're buying for kids, but if you are, get a huge box and fill it with balloons and then wrap it really nicely. You can put a few little presents in there for them to open, but they will have so much fun with the box and the balloons they won't really notice the lack of presents. As other people have said - make home made presents - they mean a lot to people - a nice jar of fudge - a cake - a soft toy etc.
Good luck and well done for being so sensible

A group of friends and family put a £1 limit on presents and that was so much fun even going round and trying to find the worst present possible was fun instead of the usual nightmare, and then with the money we would of spent we pooled it all together and bought one of those unwrapped presents from oxfam, i think we bought a donkey and other bits - so hope you manage to work out your situation

You misspelled Christmas......Have you ever went to a dollar store like just a buck?everything in the store is one dollar.they have a lot of nice thrifty gifts very inexpensive.Christmas should be about family, dinner, and love, not so much gifts...You could put up the tree, have some nice christmas music, good smelling candles, fix your dinner, and watch that movie that everyone watches on Christmas ( its a wonderful life) you can purchase it at any drug store or wallmart.....You could also after dinner go around to visit friends,or you could play games....The best Of all be cheerful and put excitement into your voice and have fun....

In the UK, check out www.sendacow.org.uk; in the US, www.heifer.org. It's an organisation that provides lifestock and training in sustainable agriculture to individuals, families, and communities around the world. Then, when the animals have babies, the recipients pass the gift on to another person or family. You can give a symbolic gift of chicks, cows, rabbits ... almost any animal in the name of someone you love for Christmas! It's an incredible organisation. My dad almost cried last year when he got his gift :)

Use a special skill that you have to make gifts for everyone: baking, cooking, painting, woodworking, etc. If you don't feel "creative," offer to give free help to people for a gift (mow the lawn for you parents, cook dinner one night for very busy people, a night of free babysitting for new parents,, etc.). Those kinds of gifts are always really appreciated because they are thoughtful, and are often more needed than a new sweater or a collection of DVDs or something material.
