There can be a number of people doing different jobs, depending on how busy that store gets. For instance, I think at McDonalds I got my order taken by one person, my money taken by another, and the food given to me by another -- so that's 3 different people right there. However, one person can do all the tasks at once. First, when they take orders, they get put into the computer in order and they stay there until that person comes up to the window. If there's people ahead of that person in line, those orders will come up first. They come up just so you can tell them the total and you can cash them out. To put in a new order you just hit the new order button, or start putting in new things, then click done to put the order in the computer. If the person at the first window takes the money and/or the orders it makes it a lot easier. If somebody is at another register altogether, taking orders for the drive thru on one of the counter registers that helps too. They can add those orders to the drive-thru queue and it all comes out in order. The only time it slows down is when somebody orders then drives away (because then people will get the wrong thing if not noticed) or people want to change their order at the window, which slows it down a little. That was all very confusing, but they basically just use technology to keep the orders "in order".

Computers keep it all in order. Sometimes mistakes do happen but, it's a combination of computers and multi-tasking.
Not really that hard of a job. Probably why it's a lot of teen's first job. ^_^

I worked at Wendy's - we had 3 orders on the screen at a time when you did the orders and collecting. It's not that rough.

It's all done on computer. If you go to Jack-in-the-box you can see the order being rung up in front of your eyes.
The can keep tabs on the order on computer but they cannot prevent mistakes by the person who stuffs the bags.
