Britain does have their own space operations, and they participate with France, Italy, German, and others united as the European Space Agency (ESA). Britain has produced some outstanding scientific satellites, has their own communictions and military satellites, has produced parts or all of craft that went to Mars or that orbit the earth and return valuable scientific data...
Nothing wrong with the way they do their space science. Sharing the costs spreads the risk.
