Neither, 'tis a myth! Contrary to popular belief, lemmings do not periodically hurl themselves off of cliffs and into the sea. Cyclical explosions in population do occasionally cause lemmings to attempt migration to less densly populated areas. When such a migration occurs, some lemmings die by falling over cliffs or drowning in lakes or rivers. These deaths, however, are not 'suicide' attempts, but accidental deaths resulting from the lemmings' venturing into unfamiliar territories and being crowded and pushed over dangerous ledges. The truth is that when the competition for food, space, or mates becomes too intense, lemmings are much more likely to kill each other than to kill themselves!

it's a myth that lemmings jump off cliffs. I don't know who started it, but disney perpetuated it in the film white wilderness where lemmings were forced off a cliff.

I don't think anyone has figured out why lemmings commit suicide. I have always thought it might be nature's way of populationj control.

I've tried talking down a few lemmings from the top of tower blocks and it didn't work - i think they are kamikaze and believe it is their mission in life - they die smiling!!

They are not suicidal just poor vision .
They see the cliff top and waters under as new pastures.
By the time they get there its too late.

I think they are blissfully happy and just don't let silly things like holes, walls and sheer drops bother them.
