Actually one is not better than another. You need to choose from channels 1, 6 or 11. Selecting anything else in between is not advised because if there are other wireless netorks nearby, this will cause what is called cochannel interference and both networks will suffer. So don't choose channels 2/3/4/5 for example, because only 1/6/11 are non-overlapping. You can select the best channel for your own use either by trial and error or by downloading a utility like netstumbler to see what other wireless networks are out there and what channels they are using.

there is no "best" channel, it all depends on the wireless activity around you, such as cell phones, cordless phones, your neighbors' cordless phones and cell phones, wireless mice, wireless anything, anything that uses RF. just tinker with the different ones, the reason it's there is to prevent interference, if your router/ap or whatever wireless device is on channel 6 and your neighbor's is on channel 6, then you'll have issues. just keep changing it and see where _you_ get the best signal.
and as far as 6 or 11, those are probably the most common, so that would really make them the worst.
