Water dog is one of the common names given to any of a variety of different kinds of salamanders and newts.

It most commonly refers to the genus Necturus, also known as mud puppies.

They do have remarkable powers of regeneration, often (but not always) able to regrow legs, or a tail. However, if you cut off their head, they're very much dead afterwards.

Sorry, the only water dogs I have heard of are the Portuguese water dogs, which are really dogs.
