Winston Churchill finally retired as prime minister, aged 80. That was the year Rock Around the Clock, featured in the movie The Blackboard Jungle, became a massive hit, arguably marking the start of the rock 'n' roll era.

Yep, google really helps, here, I entered simply 1955 and found useful links on page 1
This one especially is for the BBC - and contains a MASS of information about 1955 - with plenty of totally different events going on.

Try looking in your local library or possibly your own book case for a "cyclopedia". It's just a book that gives details of major events listed by year and usually subject matter. If you do go to your library, try to find an almanac of the year '55 that will usually give some interesting facts and stuff.
Hope to have been of help, and good luck to your daughter :)

Try here:
http://www.dmarie.com/timecap/
you put in a date and it gives you headlines, people born, prices of gas, houses etc., popular toys and books, who was president and vice president. I use this when it is someone's birthday and give them a printout of what was going on in the world when they born. You do have to put in a month and date too, but maybe you can keep trying different dates for that year and check the headlines. Good Luck!

Do not use wikipedia.....it's written by everyday users that can easily be wrong. Simply go to an online Encyclopedia and go from there....there are scores of them you'll be able to use for free and they even have them for kids that are studying. good luck. (britannica.com)
