Rev. Parris was the father of Abigail who began the accusations about witchcraft. In the Crucible, he is portrayed as a self-centered hypocrite, who is more concerned about his position and reputation, and the good name of his family...than the lives of his parishoners.
I played the role in High School, and it was great fun...that was back in 1974, and I gave it a little bit of my Richard Nixon impression.

You really should read the play and try to get the video to watch. it was written as a play and is therefore a performance piece, rather than a book to read.
The Reverend Parris is an ungodly hypocrite. He rules the people of his parish by fear. He is selfish and puts his own reputation before anything else.
Look for examples of the way he treats people cruelly and unfairly and then explain what these examples show about his character. Look also for things people say about him, to understand his character from another point of view. Remember that whenever you pass an opinion or make a statement, you must support it with a quotation or close reference to the text and explain why the playwright chose to present him in this way and the effect it has on the audience.

Julie gives a good answer. Read Miller's introduction to the play - he talks about Parris. By the way, Parris is Abigail's uncle, not her father. Watch the video and/or read the play. It's one of the great plays of 20th century American theatre which is still relevant today. Reading the play is the only way to answer your question.

The other people have it covered, I have seen it twice, and read it in my English class, are you in 11th grade? I just wanted to say that Parris was not Abigails father. Her parents, in the play, were killed by Native Americans. In real life her parents were accused of witchcraft.
