It's only in the back room, but if you try to connect it will tell you another network is there... what should i do about it

I'm using a linksys rouder...... uh i'm preatty sure it's not wifi i'd have to ask my brother, but he's in wisconsin. It pops up saying "more than one wireless netowrk connected click here for more details" Then the network from the airfield across the street picks up and then it says Linksys network unprotected, which is ours. We've tried making ours primary, but it still doesn't work

Basically the best thing for you to do is to change the settings on your wireless router. It sounds as if you have a neighbor who probably has the similar wireless network as you and you both have the same wireless network name and settings. Go into the router's settings wizard (check you manufacturer's website if you need instructions on how to do that) and rename your wireless network to something more unique.

If this is a case where there just exists another network (and the names are different) then you can just ignore it. It won't hurt anything. Just make sure that your wireless network is listed higher than theirs in your Preferred networks. (Which can be found when you select Properties on your wireless network connection and then select the Wireless Networks tab.)

{EDIT}
Have you removed the airfield's network name in your preferred list? By removing it, it should keep you from connecting to them automatically. You don't have to worry about the pop up that says other networks are available. As long as you don't connect to their network, it shouldn't be a problem. Hopefully, by removing their SSID, it should keep you connected to your wireless network.

The other option you have is to secure your wireless connection. My wife and I had to do this living at an apartment complex that had 9 different networks all overlapping. By adding WEP security, your computer will only join your network unless you force it to connect to another network.

It is also possible that you have enabled the Wireless Zero Configuration Service which would basically try to connect you automatically to whatever the strongest wireless signal is.

You might take a look at this article and see if it helps you troubleshoot this:

I`ve experienced a few problems with the Atheros chip in the past and I found the only way past it at the time was to disable it and plug in a USB dongle which fixed the problem. Another thing you could try is to reset the TCP/IP stack using the following method; Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt pressing Enter after each line. Type: netsh winsock reset catalog Type: netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log Type: netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log Reboot the machine.

Are we talking about wifi networks here or not?

If not, then it might be that there is more than one network name in use.

If wifi, you can always just change the channel - BUT I have never seen that message - it either connects to a wifi AP or not - it might ask for a key, but I have never seen it say something like "Another network is here".

What netowkr system?
what operating system?
EXACTLY what error message please?

(edit question and we can edit our answers!) :)

The windows network setup wizard includes an option to block other networks, or to mark one network as a preferred network. Try using that. Or, as an alternative you can always go to your neighbors house and hit their router with a baseball bat. That works too.

Run your Security software like Norton or MC Afee for a Virus infection or Trojan worms and remove it,if not download the Yahoo tool bar and use the new free software .Or rely on Microsoft window security software.
