You don't. Email is like regular postal mail. Only it gets delivered immediately (usually.) So it's up to the user to check it when they want. Some websites like myspace.com install a tracker that will tell you when the person you're contacting is online, but email services generally don't.

One way is to request an Internet Receipt, that is, if your ISP offers this service. AOL is easy, simply click on the "check status" tab under "Sent Mail". I know with AOL I use the internet receipt, but it sometimes just gives a "message sent" status report, meaning the only thing they are showing me is that it got from point A to point B.

You don't.When they answer your mail you will surely know that they checked. You can also steal their password to learn if they checked(this is illegal). If you recieve a failure in your mailbox then they cannot recieved it due to some problem.

If you have the same company messenger you do really know when they are in their email, of course, they must have been registered in yours.

I think AOL and Myspace are the only ones that have the "read"/"unread(Sent)" feature.

I don't know if this is possible, but on most e-mail, you can "track the message" to see if it is read or not.
